Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Wireless Communications

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a promising solution to reconfigure the wireless environment in controllable way. To compensate for double-fading attenuation RIS-aided link, large number of passive reflecting elements (REs) are conventionally deployed at RIS, resulting surface size and considerable circuit power consumption. In this paper, we propose new type called active where each RE assisted by loads (negative resistance), that reflect amplify incident signal instead only it with adjustable phase shift as case RIS. Therefore, given budget strengthened link can be achieved increasing REs well amplifying signal. We consider use an RIS single input multiple output (SIMO) system. However, would unintentionally RIS-correlated noise, thus proposed system has balance conflict between received maximization noise minimization receiver. achieve goal, optimize coefficient matrix receive beamforming An alternating optimization algorithm solve problem. Specifically, obtained closed-form based on linear minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) criterion, while solving series sequential convex approximation (SCA) problems. Simulation results show could better performance over conventional same budget.
